After you come across the overpass, you will see the area where we turn out the horses (a grassy triangle) and you’ll be near 88th street and the South Conduit. Horse 201: Learn to Lead-Walk, Forest Hills

This is a hands-on workshop, including live demonstrations of the proper technique of lead- walking, 

taught by GallopNYC staff. Develop your volunteer skills through hands-on experience outside of lessons, with the guided feedback of a professional. 


GallopNYC puts a great amount of time and energy into the care of our horses and we teach our 

community to communicate with horses through body language to avoid the common mistakes of pulling 

on the horse's head, invading their headspace, and misleading communication.

  • Prepare arena and riders for lessons 
  • Assist with rider support during mounting and dismounting 
  • Walk (and jog) next to the rider throughout the lesson and provide physical support as necessary (also called "side-walking")
  • Prompt the rider to follow directions given by the instructor
  • Assist with groundwork and various games/activities
  • Help with equipment set up and clean up
  • Fulfill other important roles as needed
